If you take driver's education, you may get your license when you are 16 years and 180 days old. If you do not take driver's education, you must wait until you are 16 years and 270 days old.
You must hold either a driver education permit or a learner permit for a minimum of 180 days before you can get your license.
Behind The Wheel offers drive tests to students that have completed our driver's education program with a passing grade of 80% or above for both the classroom and driving portions for an additional fee of $25. To make the student feel more comfortable, he or she will complete the drive test in the same vehicle that previous drives were completed in. You also have the option of taking your drive test at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in your own vehicle. Anyone holding a learner permit who did not attend an approved driver's education course is required to take the drive test at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The driver must supply his or her own vehicle for the BMV drive test. (For a fee of $50, Behind The Wheel will furnish our vehicle for the drive test for those holding a learner permit.)
The minimum requirements for an Indiana drive test either at Behind The Wheel or at your local BMV consist of four right turns; four left turns; and parallel parking. Please call us at 812-402-7058 in Evansville or 812-490-1777 in Newburgh for additional information or to schedule drive tests.
To schedule a drive test at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, please call your local BMV or set up an appointment online at www.myBMV.com
As of July 1, 2012 all students seeking a driver education permit are required to take a written knowledge test. Students that have already passed this test in order to receive their driver's education permit are not required to take the test a second time in order to get their license.
